Donald Trump on Thursday expressed strong admiration for Narendra Modi, calling him a “great man” and a “friend,” while indicating that a visit to India next year remains on the agenda.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said his discussions with Modi were “going great,” highlighting that the Indian leader had significantly reduced purchases of Russian oil—a move the U.S. has long sought. When asked directly about a visit to India next year, Trump replied, “It could be, yes.”
The comments come amid intensified trade negotiations between the U.S. and India. The two countries are working toward a comprehensive trade framework as Washington has imposed steep tariffs—up to 50 %—on some Indian imports, driven in part by India’s energy sourcing from Russia.
Modi’s outreach and Trump’s acknowledgment of a potential visit signal an apparent thaw in bilateral ties, which had grown tense in recent months over trade imbalances and energy policy. The potential visit, if it happens, would underscore the personal rapport between the two leaders and further energise the strategic partnership between their countries.
