Crude oil prices fell sharply on Monday as expectations of renewed US-Iran negotiations reduced some of the geopolitical risk premium built into energy markets. US crude dropped below US$80 a barrel, with markets responding to US President Donald Trump’s announcement that talks with Iran would resume. The development has raised hopes that a diplomatic solution could reduce pressure on important oil-shipping routes.
For India, a sustained decline in crude prices would be a positive development because the country remains heavily dependent on imported oil. Lower energy costs could help contain inflation, improve the external balance and reduce input costs for several industries. However, traders remain cautious because any breakdown in negotiations could quickly push oil prices higher again.
