Money Times Talk (MTTs) – 09/10/2026

  • As per market grapevine, retail investors are increasingly seen as the “shock absorbers” when FIIs sell, while continuing to bear STT, LTCG, brokerage and other charges. If retail participation in equity mutual funds weakens significantly, policymakers may face greater pressure to consider tax relief for domestic investors.

  • Big alert: The ongoing Iran-US conflict remains a major crude-oil risk for India. Any escalation could push Brent higher, while signs of de-escalation could bring prices down. As the world’s major crude importer, India remains particularly exposed to sustained high oil prices. Brent above $80 remains a concern for the Indian economy.

  • As per market grapevine, repeated increases in LTCG, STCG and STT, along with changes in debt-fund and SGB taxation, have increased the overall tax burden on investors. There is a view that lower STT and LTCG could help attract FII/FPI/NRI capital and reduce the shift of household savings towards debt funds and bank FDs.

  • Big wisdom: “Never give your profits back to the market.” The objective is not to sell everything quickly but to protect realised gains. Partial profit booking, disciplined stop-losses and position sizing can help preserve capital. Hold when earnings, cash flows and the business thesis remain strong, but reassess when valuation runs far ahead of fundamentals, momentum becomes excessive or the investment thesis weakens. The goal is wealth retention, not catching the exact top.

  • What’s easier than predicting the market? Follow the plan. Market timing is difficult even for experienced investors. Rather than reacting to every short-term move, focus on asset allocation, quality businesses, valuation and long-term objectives.

  • Bank FD sahi hai. Post office sahi hai. Gold sahi hai. Equity mutual funds have faced a difficult period, raising questions about short- and medium-term returns. Weak Indian markets despite global resilience highlight the need to review valuations, taxation and investor confidence. As per market grapevine, relief in LTCG/STT could help rebuild confidence and prevent further diversion of equity savings towards debt funds and bank FDs.
