Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on Russian territory, with reports describing more than 1,000 drones launched during the wider operation. Fires were reported at an oil terminal and an oil depot in the St Petersburg region, while damage and disruption were also reported at other facilities. Russian authorities said air defences intercepted large numbers of drones.
The attacks add to the pressure on energy infrastructure amid continuing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine. The strikes also come amid disagreements over an announced energy ceasefire, with both sides accusing the other of continuing attacks. Damage to oil facilities could affect regional operations and add uncertainty to energy markets, although the broader effect on global supply will depend on the extent and duration of any disruption.
