Indian equity markets finished Monday’s session with substantial losses as investors reacted to pressure on private-sector banks, weakness in information technology shares and concerns over elevated crude oil prices. The BSE Sensex fell 876.37 points, or 1.17%, to close at 73,852.90, while the Nifty 50 declined 257.20 points, or 1.11%, to settle at 22,888.95.
Private-sector banking shares were among the main contributors to the decline, while the IT, FMCG, realty and automobile indices also faced selling pressure. Concerns about lending margins and market volatility added to investor caution despite growth in several banks’ quarterly profits. Broader market indices also declined.
Indian exchanges are closed on Tuesday for a trading holiday, making Monday’s closing figures the latest completed-session benchmarks. When trading resumes, investors will be tracking quarterly earnings, foreign investment flows, crude oil prices and geopolitical developments for direction.
