The Russia-Ukraine conflict is increasingly affecting commercial shipping across the Black Sea, raising concerns for countries dependent on grain and other exports from the region. Recent attacks have hit cargo vessels operating near Romania and Bulgaria, prompting NATO to strengthen surveillance along its eastern flank through additional maritime patrol aircraft, radars and drones.
Reuters reported that a Greek container ship was sunk by naval drones in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, while several other vessels were struck in October. Russia has denied targeting Ukraine’s neighbouring countries. The attacks have also disrupted the movement of agricultural commodities, forcing exporters to explore alternative shipping routes.
The situation is being monitored by international markets because prolonged disruption to Black Sea shipping could affect grain availability, transportation costs and food prices.
