Donald Trump reiterated on 26 October 2025 that India will fully halt its imports of Russian oil, declaring that India is “cutting back completely” while China is “cutting back very substantially.”
Trump made the remarks during a press briefing aboard Air Force One ahead of a summit with China, tying India’s oil reduction to U.S. sanctions on Russian energy companies Rosneft and Lukoil.
Despite Trump’s claims, India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated it had no record of any recent conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump on this matter, and reaffirmed that India’s energy-import decisions are based solely on national interest and the needs of its consumers.
According to industry sources, Indian refiners are reviewing their contracts with Russian suppliers but a complete halt is not immediately expected; several shipments booked months ahead remain in pipeline.
The assertion intensifies pressure from Washington on India’s energy imports from Russia and underscores the broader diplomatic friction in U.S.–India relations amid global energy and trade tensions.
