How a legacy Tata bet helped Rekha Jhunjhunwala buck portfolio slump in 2025

Rekha Jhunjhunwala emerged as one of the few marquee investors to outperform in an otherwise tough year for Indian equities in 2025, thanks largely to a strategic investment in a legacy Tata Group company that acted as the backbone of her portfolio.

Despite a sharp downturn in small-cap stocks that dragged many portfolios into negative territory, Jhunjhunwala’s publicly disclosed holdings across 25 listed companies saw their combined value increase from about Rs. 40,589 crore in December 2024 to around Rs. 41,379 crore in December 2025, marking a rare gain amid broader market weakness.

A key reason for this resilience was her significant stake in Titan Company, a Tata Group flagship, which delivered robust performance throughout 2025. Titan’s shares rose roughly 21 % year-to-date, adding substantial value to her portfolio thanks to strong festive demand and persistent consumer spending, despite pressures from higher gold prices.

Alongside the Tata bet, her exposure to financials also paid off. Stocks such as Federal Bank and Canara Bank posted strong gains, benefiting from improving asset quality, credit growth, and institutional investment interest. Federal Bank’s share price climbed about 31 %, while Canara Bank surged around 47 %, both contributing materially to her portfolio’s performance. The Economic Times

Other defensive segments, like healthcare with Fortis Healthcare up approximately 23 %, provided additional support. Meanwhile, some holdings, particularly in infrastructure and education-linked stocks, recorded losses, underscoring that overall market stress still influenced parts of her portfolio.

Jhunjhunwala’s ability to offset downturns with gains in high-quality, large-cap stocks highlights the value of portfolio composition and strategic long-term positioning, even during periods of significant market volatility.
