The state of Maharashtra has announced a pioneering plan to overhaul its electricity-distribution network using artificial intelligence, debuting a first-of-its-kind “Digital Twin” model tailored for solar and renewable energy supplies.
The project will be implemented by MahaVitaran — the state’s electricity distribution company — in partnership with international stakeholders such as The Rockefeller Foundation (RF) and Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), under the state’s energy department.
Announcing the initiative, Devendra Fadnavis said this marks the start of a broader push for sustainable, AI-driven upgrades in Maharashtra’s power sector.
Under the new setup, the Digital Twin will serve as a real-time, AI-based simulation of the electricity distribution network — enabling better demand-supply planning, improved grid efficiency, streamlined maintenance and reduced losses. The system aims to support notably increased use of solar and renewable energy across the state, especially benefitting rural users such as farmers.
Officials say that beyond technical gains, the shift is expected to strengthen customer service, bolster operational & financial stability of the distribution company, and pave the way for greener, more reliable energy delivery across Maharashtra.
