Meta Platforms announced on October 15, 2025, that it will invest $1.5 billion to establish a new data center in El Paso, Texas, marking its 29th such facility globally. This investment underscores Meta’s commitment to expanding infrastructure to support artificial intelligence (AI) workloads.
The El Paso data center, Meta’s third in Texas, is expected to commence operations in 2028. The facility is designed to scale up to a 1-gigawatt capacity, sufficient to power a city the size of San Francisco for an entire day, positioning it as one of the largest planned data center campuses in the United States.
The project is projected to create approximately 100 permanent jobs upon completion, with over 1,800 construction workers anticipated to be on-site at peak construction. Meta cited El Paso’s robust electrical grid and skilled workforce as key factors in selecting the location.
This new facility is part of Meta’s broader investment strategy in Texas, where the company has already invested over $10 billion and employs more than 2,500 people across the state. The El Paso data center will operate on 100% renewable energy and feature a closed-loop, liquid-cooled system that continuously recycles water. Meta has pledged to restore twice the amount of water consumed by the data center to local watersheds, exceeding its 2030 goal to be “water-positive” by replenishing more water than it uses.
