Money Times Talk (MTTs) – 28/10/2026

  • Very big negative for equity and mutual fund investors: Goldman Sachs reportedly expects another US Fed rate hike in October, while the Fed’s dot plot signals a hawkish, higher-for-longer stance. Further tightening could pressure equities and encourage flows towards bonds and bank FDs. Small- and mid-caps remain vulnerable; avoid catching a falling knife.

  • Big alert: Small-caps account for around 49.2% of India’s outstanding MTF book despite representing only 20.1% of free-float market capitalisation—about 2.45 times their market-weighted share. This concentration raises the risk of forced selling and liquidity stress during a downturn. Avoid leveraged positions and remain cautious in smaller stocks.

  • Why are FIIs selling Indian equities? Key concerns include dividend and capital-gains taxes, higher F&O STT, a weak rupee, limited AI-related investment opportunities and slower-than-expected nominal GDP growth. Around 20% of Nifty 50 stocks have delivered zero returns over five years, while 56% are reportedly in a bearish trend. Policy measures that restore investor confidence could help, but caution remains warranted.

  • Main Reasons Behind the Recent Sharp Crash in Small- and Mid-Cap Stocks: a) Heavy exposure to Margin Trading Facility (MTF). b) Mutual funds are directing substantial funds towards IPOs, OFS and QIPs instead of supporting secondary-market stocks. c) Small- and mid-caps remain under severe pressure; avoid catching a falling knife. d) High Brent crude prices could fuel inflation, negatively impacting the Indian economy and equity mutual fund investors. e) As per market grapevine, investors hope the Government and Finance Ministry will take immediate corrective measures or issue positive statements to restore domestic and foreign investor confidence. Otherwise, equity mutual fund investments could shift towards debt funds and bank FDs.

  • Short-Term Stocks to Watch – As per Market Grapevine: Atlanta Electricals, Butterfly, Chemcon Speciality Chemicals, DCB Bank, HFCL, Indorama, Jayant Eco-Organics (JAYNECOIND), Jyoti, Pennar Industries, Rajesh Power (BSE SME), RBL Bank and Shetron. Keep these stocks on the radar/watchlist; returns are not guaranteed.

  • Brent Crude, Drought and Liquidity Concerns: a) Brent crude above $80 is a major negative for the Indian economy. At around $114–115, it poses a significant risk to the economy and equity mutual fund investors. b) Severe drought conditions across several states due to El Niño could further hurt the economy and investor sentiment. c) Continuous IPOs, OFS and QIPs could drain liquidity from the secondary market.  d) As per market grapevine, investors hope the Government and Finance Ministry will take immediate action or issue positive statements to restore domestic and foreign investor confidence. Otherwise, funds could shift from equity mutual funds to debt funds and bank FDs.
