Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) has reported a gas discovery from a deepwater well in the Mahanadi Basin, around 43 km off the Odisha coast. The discovery was made on September 18 at a depth of around 1,450 metres, with gas flowing from the well for three days at encouraging rates and sustained pressure.
ONGC has not yet disclosed estimated reserves or the commercial viability of the discovery. Further testing will determine the recoverable resources. The well is part of the company’s ongoing deepwater exploration campaign, and the latest discovery could potentially be developed alongside earlier discoveries in the basin using shared infrastructure.
