Former US President Donald Trump responded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado being awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, revealing that she personally called him to share the news. Trump joked, “It’s a very nice thing to do. I didn’t say, ‘Then give it to me,’ though I think she might have. She was very nice.”
The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized Machado for her persistent advocacy for democratic rights in Venezuela and her efforts toward a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy. Despite Trump’s public campaign for the prize, the committee emphasized that the decision was based solely on Machado’s achievements and alignment with Alfred Nobel’s criteria.
In a social media video, Machado expressed surprise upon learning of the award, saying, “What is this? I can’t believe it.” She later dedicated the recognition to Trump, acknowledging his support for Venezuelan democracy and his role in promoting democratic values internationally.
Trump, who has previously highlighted his involvement in resolving international conflicts, took Machado’s call in good humor, while the Nobel Committee reaffirmed its focus on honoring those whose actions truly reflect the principles of peace established by Alfred Nobel.
