Sridhar Vembu, founder and Chief Scientist of Zoho Corporation, has called on the Indian government to enforce a policy requiring foreign artificial intelligence (AI) companies and Global Capability Centres (GCCs) operating in India to register their intellectual property (IP) locally or license it to their parent entities abroad.
Vembu emphasized that India’s top talent is being utilized to generate significant value overseas without corresponding benefits flowing back to the Indian economy. He questioned why Indian citizens working in India, generating valuable IP, should have that IP registered only in foreign countries, thereby depriving India of rightful returns.
In an interview, Vembu suggested that the government should ensure that companies developing technology or AI models in India comply with Indian laws, including requirements for IP registration or licensing. He described this as an achievable policy change that could help retain the economic value generated by Indian professionals.
This call to action reflects a broader concern about the need for India to safeguard its intellectual capital and ensure that the benefits of its human resources contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
