  • Jahangir Aziz of JPM on Trump 2.0. He ends by saying 'I hope I am completely wrong'.
  • 10 points
  • 1. We at JP Morgan are taking Trump literally - assuming that Trump will do what he has said he will do. We think tariffs & immigration policies will be changed dramatically.
  • 2. On tariffs, we think China & Malaysia/Vietnam (through which Chinese trans shipment goes through) will be targeted. Average U.S. tariffs on China imports is 20% right now, think it could go as high as 60%. Maybe not 60%, could be a tad less - but significant.
  • 3. We will probably we will see many more countries under tariff umbrella on Jan-20th or the week of Jan 20th.
  • 4. Markets currently are pricing in only 6-7% tariff increase. Average tariffs U.S. imposes right now is 2.3%. U.S. tariffs could go up 10-20% on RoW from here. On China, U.S. tariffs could be a tad less than 60%.
  • 5. What happens to Indian Rupee depends entirely on USD/CNY. If CNY falls 5% from here, pressure on Rupee to depreciate will become even more.
  • 6. In order to minimize impact on U.S. inflation, Trump may impose lower tariffs on consumer goods, higher tariffs on intermediate goods.
  • 7. A Fed rate hike is extremely unlikely. We expect Fed to cut rates now only in June & September. Terminal rate is now 4% vs 3% just three months back.
  • 8. We have been arguing for a rate cut in India for a long time now. No reason for no rate cut - expect one in February. Expect 100 bps rate cuts by RBI in 2025.
  • 9. If tariffs are not too harsh & USD/CNY doesn't depreciate much, think Rupee can fall 2%.
  • 10. Is India insulated to U.S. tariffs ? -> 'Depends on what China does. China in 2018-19 lost significant market share in U.S. China recouped all that lost market share by moving into EM Asia & Latin America. We could see China doing the same thing again. In this event, India will have to think of FX policy and things even beyond that.'

  • Emkay On Hospital Stocks
  • Indian corporate hospitals have embarked on an expansion spree, conquering whitespaces (10% CAGR over FY24-27)
  • An ageing population (190mn by 2030), improving insurance penetration (41% now), medical value tourism, and lower healthcare expenditure (3% of GDP) offer a multi-decadal growth opportunity
  • This supports foray of corporate hospitals beyond existing core markets Surge in valuation metrics, given the considerable improvement in margins and return ratios, seem justified Sustenance of growth with higher focus on brownfield (50% of incremental capacity) is unlikely to dent return profiles of our coverage companies.

  • PVRINOX; JM FINANCIAL ON PVR INOX
  • BUY INR 1,600
  • Most of the recent selling was by the arbitrage funds. Few factors explain this:
  • a) PVR-Inox is going off F&O segment on 28th Feb, prompting unwinding
  • b) Future-cash spread had increased in October, likely on expectations of a strong Q3 (which did not pan out).
  • Arbitrage funds’ holding in the stock has fallen under 1% now, limiting incremental unwinding. Spread has shrunk too. Be that as it may, the fall presents an attractive entry level in the stock.
  • Strong movie pipeline of 2025 and absence of specific headwinds (General Elections, T20 world cup) should improve footfall. PVR-Inox’s slower new screen addition should aid occupancies too. Moreover, a shift towards asset-light model (FOCO) means cash flow growth should exceed top-line’s, supporting valuations.
