Indian equity benchmarks opened higher on Wednesday, October 21, as buying in information technology shares and Reliance Industries supported the market. At around 9:57 a.m. IST, the BSE Sensex had risen 0.7% to 74,370.91, while the Nifty 50 gained 0.57% to 23,019.2, according to Reuters.
The Nifty IT index rose around 2.3%, supported by gains in companies including L&T Technology Services following its quarterly results. Tata Consultancy Services, HCLTech and Wipro also advanced. Reliance Industries gained as Jio Platforms’ IPO opened for subscription. However, small-cap and mid-cap indices traded lower, indicating that the gains were not spread evenly across the market.
Investors are tracking quarterly earnings, global market sentiment, foreign investment flows and crude-oil prices. Elevated oil prices remain a concern for India because higher energy import costs can affect inflation, the trade balance and company margins. The figures above reflect early trading and should not be treated as closing levels.
